What a hot mess! A real fine hot mess in the age of Corona Virus lurking round. But let's not digress and get on it.
Megan the Stallion has been hot for a minute and now wants to renegotiate her contract on the back of alleged advice from Roc Nation. And of course Roc Nation and her now manager T Farris is keeping very quiet about this.
It is a mess for a number of reasons, first the music business in a cut throat industry where trust is rarity and people are taken advantage of. Also secondly we forget that Megan the Stallion is young and has recently been bereaved. So in bereavement, at time things aren't clear or the people don't act logically.
The Situation
My understanding is that Carl Crawford (former MBL superstar athlete) has a grassroots independent music table called 1501 Certified Entertainment. He discovered Megan the Stallion, threw a lot of money behind her and her talent, and now she's a 'star' with Roc Nation backing, she wants to renegotiate her contract. Her argument is that her contract is unfair however she's also making very serious allegations against 1501 Certified Entertainment which paints Carl Crawford in a very poor light. She allegedly signed a 360 contract - this means not only music was included, but merchandise, touring, music publishing, endorsements, appearances etc. It's also a four album deal, and she hasn't even done one.
HOWEVER we need to appreciate when she signed the deal, she had nothing, and a percentage of NOTHING is NOTHING. And typically, the contract was high but not so high it was extortionate by industry standard.
However she could have gone the independent route but again it was about investment.
Carl Crawford is understandably irrairated and annoyed about the whole thing because it's also his intregity brought in the question. More so when he invested money in Megan the Stallion, which she also acknowledges. Carl Crawford was the money bag. It's also painful when one is nurturing a star and it plays out like that - there are marketing costs, studio times, clothes etc.
What now?
The lawyers are now in on the act, so taking 1501 Certified Entertainment. Roc Nation are quietly watching the situation, but I need to point to Rita Ora vs Roc Nation, so Megan the Stallion needs understand that it's still business and she could be in this situation with any record label.
Megan the Stallion signed four album deal but if she had Rihannah's work ethic she would have completed at least two/three by now. The albums don't need to perfect. She probably wants major features, and to hit Billboards chart but in reality, she could have hit the studio recording.
What Next?
Megan the Stallion has been recent bereaved so she probably doesn't know who to trust, and she may not be emotionally in the right place, especially when her mother managed her. T Farris is not saying much nor is Roc Nation. We can only with all parties the best and hope it's resolved quickly.
